The title slide
Whether you actually plan to use this layout or not it is recommended that you put a title at least on the first slide – it can easily be changed later.
Next slides
This is where the content starts and you’ll need to click the New Slide button on the toolbar or use Insert | New Slide. The default offer is a heading and space for several lines. This will often be suitable but there are other options available.
Slide layout
For a new slide you may want to change the slide layout – the position and size of areas available for you to add content. The task pane may show you some choices. If it doesn’t use Format | Slide Layout to do so. These are well worth considering and there is a wide range to suit most purposes. It is strongly recommended that you do use layouts from this selection wherever possible. To change the display in the centre just click on the one you’d like and the main display should change. If it doesn’t, you should see an arrow appear when you mouse over a sample in the Task Pane.
Click on that and select Apply to selected slides.
The Slide Layouts are grouped as Text, Content and Text and Content. Content means an image, a chart, a table, clip art or other variations best avoided for now. The most useful ones are the two column text slides or text on one side and image on the other which, combined with the usual single text panel, can be utilised to produce a perfectly adequate presentation.
The important thing is that these layouts all feature a heading area and that this, and the various panels will remain in constant positions throughout a presentation of several slides. There is nothing more annoying to watch than headings which jump around as slides progress.
Changing slide layout
It may well be the case that either the fonts provided initially or the position of panels isn’t really suitable. These can be changed on individual slides but it is much better to do so using the Master Slide or you may find that applying a Slide Design sorts things out – so try and resist individual changes until you have some content.
