Format | Slide Design will change the right hand panel to display thumbnails of slide templates.

Clicking on any of these will apply the theme to the whole of your slide show. These can be a quick and effective way to put colour and style into your show, without having to mess around with complicated choices in choosing your own background, fonts, layouts etc.

The range of designs may not, though, be to everyone’s taste and they seem to get worse with each new version of the application. PowerPoint97 had a far better set in my view. The saving grace, however, if none do appeal, is the massive range of really professional designs now available for download from the Microsoft PowerPoint web site. This can be accessed (frustratingly) via the final slide in the list. There are also many other free presentation templates available on the internet.
